Almost 85% of the population of Ethiopia relies on farming

However, rains have failed frequently over the past five years.

  • Almost 85% of the population of Ethiopia relies on farming

  • Climate change is making it harder for families to feed their kids

  • Children are facing severe acute malnutrition

  • Urgent treatment is needed

Acutely malnourished children across Ethiopia are in need of life-saving support. Your donation can make a difference.

The countries least responsible for the effects of climate change are the most vulnerable to them. This is the case in Ethiopia, where climate change is causing more frequent failed rains and droughts, followed by intense flooding that destroys farmland and crops.

Families that rely on agriculture for an income do not have time to recover between crises, and are struggling to feed their children. This is leading to rising cases of severe acute malnutrition in young children under the age of five in Ethiopia. And sadly, cuts to international aid are compounding this crisis.

The situation was critical even before these changes, but now, we need your support more than ever to reach children like Tadalesh*.

Tadalesh's story

We met Jamilah* when she brought her two-year-old son Tadalesh to a Concern-supported health centre in West Imi, an area affected by drought. She told us that she often goes without food for days, to make sure that her children eat what beans and sorghum she and her husband can afford. She became concerned when Tadalesh grew weak and stopped playing with his siblings. Here, he was diagnosed with severe malnutrition.

Our team immediately put little Tadalesh on a course of emergency fortified milk, the first step in treating children suffering from severe malnutrition. This milk helped rehydrate Tadalesh, before he was moved on to energy-rich strengthening milk packed with protein. Tadalesh was soon able to play again, and Jamilah was given emergency therapeutic food to continue her son’s recovery at home.

There are thousands of mothers like Jamilah across Ethiopia who need our support. Your generous donation can give children like Tadalesh the treatment they need to recover from malnutrition.
