Concern Debates 40th Anniversary

Concern Debates 40th Anniversary

Since 1984, the Concern Debates Programme has been a beacon of inspiration, challenging tens of thousands of young minds to think critically and engage deeply with the most pressing global justice issues of our time. As the longest-running Global Citizenship Education Programme in the region, it has not only sparked rigorous debate but also deepened understanding of the complex causes of poverty, aligning with Concern’s mission to create lasting change.

Your story matters. Whether you were a debater, mentor, or adjudicator, we’d love to hear how the Concern Debates Programme has touched your life. Share your experiences, memories, or even old photos and newspaper clippings with us at debates@concern.net

As we approach the 40th anniversary of this flagship programme, we invite you to join us in celebrating its profound impact on generations across Ireland. We’re collecting stories and memories from past debaters, mentors, and adjudicators to honor the legacy and celebrate the shared journey of learning and activism.

Join the Celebration

The 2024-2025 programme year will be packed with exciting events to commemorate this milestone:

  • 05 December 2024: Launch of the Concern Debates 40th Anniversary Stories Project Video.

  • 22 May 2025: Art Exhibit showcasing archival materials, final posters, student artwork, and cherished stories. (Details TBC)

  • Throughout the Year: Students in the 2024-2025 Concern Debates will revisit ‘retro’ motions from past years, sparking lively discussions that connect the past to the present.

On this page, we’ll share fascinating stories, photos, and newspaper clippings unearthed during our archival journey. Stay tuned—there’s much more to come!
