Myanmar Earthquake: What you need to know
Powerful earthquakes in Myanmar have caused catastrophic devastation with survivors urgently needing critical support.

Where did the earthquake happen and which areas were affected?
At 12:50pm local time on Friday the 28th of March, Myanmar was struck by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake - the strongest earthquake to hit the country in decades. Minutes later, a second earthquake struck, and was followed by more aftershocks. The epicentre was near the city of Sagaing, and close to Myanmar’s second largest city Mandalay. The earthquake’s impact has been felt across the region, with tremors felt as far afield as China, India, Vietnam and Thailand.
How have people been affected by the earthquake?
So far 3,085 people have been confirmed dead, with this number rising. More than 4,000 people are injured and over 1.2 million people have been displaced since the earthquake. Hundreds of people are trapped beneath rubble, with rescue services unable to reach them and families sleeping outside in fear of further aftershocks.
Those who have survived are cut off from vital services as countless roads and buildings have been destroyed, including hospitals, schools and water supplies. Network and power lines are also down and one in three houses in Sagaing – the city closest to the earthquake’s epicentre - have collapsed.
People in Myanmar were already facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with more than 19 million people – over a third of the population - in need of aid. One in four people already did not have enough to eat.

Is aid going to support Myanmar and how are charities making a difference?
Myanmar’s military leadership has declared a state of emergency and made a rare request for international humanitarian aid.
Concern is supporting our Alliance2015 partners on the ground, to distribute hygiene kits, provide drinking water, build temporary shelters, and support those affected with cash payments and food. Alliance2015 is a strategic network of seven European non-government organisations engaged in humanitarian and development action.
